Jack Fitzgerald’s Child Safety Seat Program To Install the 50,000th Child Safety Seat

NORTH BETHESDA, MD – June 20, 2019 Fitzgerald Auto Mall will mark a milestone on June 20, 2019 as it installs the 50,000th child safety seat since the beginning of their program in 1999. Fitzgerald hosts a monthly Child Seat Inspection program at Fitzgerald Buick GMC Truck on Nicholson lane in Rockville, MD. No other local volunteer program in the United States has ever achieved this many child safety seat inspections within a single program.

Jack Fitzgerald, the founder of Fitzgerald Auto Malls, initiated the Fitzgerald Child Car Seat Inspection Program in 1999 after he learned about the dangers of improperly installed child safety seats. Since then, Fitzgerald Auto Malls, in partnership with national and local government agencies, has been committed to injury prevention and increasing the number of lives saved through properly installed child safety seats.

“We started this because my own people wanted to make sure children were safer in cars, including their own. I am so thankful for their efforts because I know they’re making a difference every day,” said Jack Fitzgerald. “We couldn’t do this alone and we are grateful to have the support of the local government and state organizations to promote public safety. For 20 years now, Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services and Police have been actively involved at our child safety seat events and I thank them for their support. Today we also welcome back the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board).” The Fitzgerald Child Car Seat Inspection Program has been a shining example of public-private partnership success. The local Montgomery County police and fire rescue volunteers have been integral in helping to organize and staff the events.

From 1975 through 2008, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that almost 9,000 children were saved in crashes because they were restrained in car seats or seat belts. The misuse of car seats remains a big problem and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages 3 to 14. The latest numbers show that every day in the United States, an average of 4 children younger than 14 were killed and 529 were injured in motor vehicle crashes. In 1999, the first year of the Fitzgerald Child Safety Seat Program, the misuse rate was 97%. The numbers have dropped to 50% year to date. Please join us in celebrating this milestone and join us June 20 to educate families about how to properly install their child’s car seat and safety in around vehicles.
