August 13, 2019 (Gaithersburg, MD) - U.S. Senator Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md) toured Fitzgerald Auto Mall-Gaithersburg Genesis, Hyundai, Subaru, Toyota on Monday afternoon to highlight the positive impact of the Solar Canopy on the local community.
The Fitzgerald Solar Array has 2,435 panels which covers approximately 45,168 square feet. Annually, this solar roof will generate 1,100,00 kWh (Kilowatt Hours), which is estimated to generate approximately 83% of the campus power.
"What an incredible investment in our community, saying, 'Look, we can figure out a way to meet part of the solution on climate change, reducing the amount of carbon footprint,"' Cardin told Fitzgerald employees gathered for the occasion. Cardin praised Fitzgerald founder, Jack Fitzgerald, for leading the way for business owners to make a difference by implementing sustainable energy practices.
The Fitzgerald Solar Canopy is the largest of any car dealer in the DMV and is believed to be the largest solar roof array east of the Mississippi.
To put this into perspective, an average house in Maryland uses about 1,200 kWk per month. The Fitzgerald Solar Roof Array will generate on average about 90,000+ kWh per month, or enough to power 75 homes per month in the area. The roof will make a tremendous positive impact on the environment as it will save approximately 1,702,800 pounds of CO2 emissions, the same amount of energy a power plant produces. This would be the equivalent of planting 42,891 trees per year in order to offset those CO2 emissions.
